The “BNP Paribas National Tennis Championship” for men and women will for 84th time in the history of Bulgarian tennis determine the country’s champions. The tournament that takes place at the “Lokomotiv” Tennis Club in Plovdiv from 26th of September to 3rd of October with award fund of 10 000 BGN is organized with the support of and named after BNP Paribas – general sponsor of the BTF and number one partner of world tennis.
13 competitors included in the world rankings for men and women have applied to participate in the championship. 9 ATP ranked tennis players – the members of the national Davis Cup by BNP Paribas team Todor Enev, Valentin Dimov, Ivaylo Traykov, the European Tennis Association number one player for 2009 in the category for boys aged under 16, Dimitar Kuzmanov, Tihomir Grozdanov, Alexander Lazov, Serafim Grozev, Petar Trendafilov, Danail Tarpov- will play in tight competition for the men’s title. From the other enrolled players, the two-time champion Ilia Kushev is the highest ranked in the national list. Among the women the main favourites are the last-year’s champion Hulia Velieva and the four tennis players with WTA ranking – Tanya Germanlieva, Desislava Mladenova, Isabella Shinikova and Nadejda Vassileva.
80 players of 26 clubs from around the country, who have applied for the championship in advance, will compete for the 5 sets of medals – men and women singles, men and women doubles and mixed doubles. The matches will be played by the traditional scheme – play-offs for 32 individual players, 16 play-offs for doubles and open qualifications. The prize is 10 000 BNG. The winner in the men’s singles category will be given 2000 BGN and the winner in the women’s singles will receive 1200 BGN. Women’s final is scheduled for Friday, October 1st. The men’s final which will be played to 3 out of 5 sets is set for Sunday, October 3rd.
Bulgarian men and women tennis champions have been selected ever since 1925 with two gaps in 1944 and 1951. Most titled players in the history of the championship are Nikolay Chuparov – 10 titles, Lyuben Genov – 9 titles, Alexander Dimitrov – German – 8 titles in the men’s category and Vera Petrunova with 11 titles and Mariya Chakyrova and Yuliya Berberyan with 9 titles in the women’s category. Last year the BNP Paribas National Champion ship’s winners were Tzvetan Mihov and Hyuliya Velieva for the men and women titles respectively.
