Donation for the purchase of 4 wind-power generators
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and in line with its global policy to contribute to sustainable development, BNP Paribas has pledged a valuable support to the Bulgarian researchers. The Foundation has made a donation which financed the purchase of a series of four arctic-tested, vertical windpower-generators and equipment which will supply the Bulgarian Antarctic Base with sufficient electrical energy. Special high-value batteries were donated by Monbat – a fast developing company which manufactures batteries for various applications.
This project has multiple effects on reinforcing the sustainable development of the Bulgarian Antarctic Base. The use of the current diesel generator will be reduced by installing four “zero emission” windpower-generators. In this way the usual supply of fuel – which is not only very costly but also generates a multitude of negative impacts on the environment such as CO2 emissions from transportation, disturbance of nature, risk of spills – will be reduced and even avoided in the future. The power generated throughout the year will improve the availability of the electricity for laboratory and communication equipment during the operating periods. The Bulgarian scientists will be able to conduct various climate research projects (measuring, storing and transmitting data). Emphasis is given on a multidisciplinary approach towards understanding the processes in main polar natural systems, their evolution and the greatest challenge of our time – climate change. The Bulgarian Antarctic Institute is intensely researching the effect on the environmental pollution and to raise awareness on green-house gases on the global environment.
BNP Paribas Bulgaria has already committed to raising awareness on the prevention of global warming. As a part of the celebration of 40th Earth Day anniversary in 2010, BNP Paribas Bulgaria organized an exhibition with photos from the 18th Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition and sponsored a documentary film about Antarctica in the frame of the international research project on climate change.
Bulgaria – a consultative member of the Antarctic Treaty from 1998 – started its polar activities in Antarctica as early as 1967 with gathering valuable experience both in carrying out scientific research, the organization of the logistics in Antarctica and the protection of the nature in Antarctica. The Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI) is nongovernmental organization chaired by Prof. Christo Pimpirev - a scientist and Doyen of the Bulgarian Antarctic Program. BAI organizes the annual Bulgarian Antarctic Expeditions, collaborates with the Antarctic Programs of the other countries with rich experience in the investigation of Polar Regions and manages the Bulgarian Antarctic Base “St. Kliment Ohridski” at Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands.
